Według starej chińskiej tradycji, zostały połączone więzami laotong, czyli dozgonnej przyjaźni. Razem zostały poddane bolesnemu rytuałowi krępowania stóp i od tego momentu, stały się niemal nierozłączne. Wspólnie przeżywają wszystkie ważne w swoim życiu chwile, zapisują je tajemniczym kobiecym pismem nu shu na sekretnym wachlarzu. Mimo to ich losy, w społeczeństwie rządzonym przez mężczyzn, potoczyły się całkiem odmiennie.
