Tuż przed świętami Bożego Narodzenia, Lee Leander (Barbara Stanwyck) zostaje przyłapana na kradzieży w sklepie jubilerskim. Ponieważ nie jest to jej pierwsze wykroczenie, młoda kobieta zostaje postawiona przed sądem. Jednak w okresie przedświątecznym trudno o wyrok. Oskarżyciel, John Sargent (Fred MacMurray), wnosi o odroczenie rozprawy... Zanosi się na to, że Lee spędzi święta w areszcie. Sargent ma z tego powodu wyrzuty sumienia, więc postanawia zabrać Lee ze sobą na farmę swoich rodziców w Idaho.
